Karen Blixen
<p style="font-weight: 400">Karen Blixen was born Karen Christentze Dinesen (1885-1962). She was born on April 17, 1885 at Rungstedlund and was a well-known Danish author who wrote a lot of stories and fairy tales. Most of Karen Blixen’s stories take place in the 19th century and are known all over the world. </p>
<p style="font-weight: 400">She was the daughter of Adolph Vilhelm Dinesen (1845-1895) and Ingeborg Westenholz (1856-1939). Adolph Vilhelm Dinesen (1807-1876) was Karen Blixen’s grandfather – he named his son after himself, which is why they have the same name. </p>
<p style="font-weight: 400"><b><strong>Relationship to Kragerup Gods</strong></b><br />
Her grandfather was born on Kragerup Gods, but was not the heir to the estate and therefore acquired Katholm Gods on Djursland in Jutland. Karen Blixen’s father was born here, but as he was also not the first heir, he bought Rungstedlund, which today is the Karen Blixen Museum and Rungstedgård, which today is a hotel, and large parts of Rungsted. </p>
<p style="font-weight: 400">Karen Blixen’s grandfather’s eldest brother Anders Didrich Dinesen (1798-1840) was the heir to Kragerup Gods, and Karen Blixen visited her relatives at Kragerup in her youth. It is said that some of her first publications, under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen, were inspired by the surroundings and history of Kragerup Gods. </p>
<p style="font-weight: 400"><b><strong>The inspiration behind Restaurant Blixen<br />
</strong></b>At Kragerup Gods, the restaurant, “Restaurant Blixen”, is named after Karen Blixen and the interior and decor is inspired by her life in Africa. In addition, her famous short story “Babette’s Feast” has been recreated as an event at Kragerup Gods with a 5-course dinner and a lecture on Karen Blixen’s life. The restaurant opened in 2015 after a complete renovation. Today, the old wood-burning stove still stands with rings and old copper pots from the 1800s. This is where Petrine cooked with a Manna cerut in her mouth during all her waking hours. Petrine was the housekeeper in the main building. Food was cooked on the old stove until Birgitte Dinesen’s grandfather died in 1965. </p>
