Jørgen Dinesen’s 50th birthday

The photograph, taken at Jørgen Eigil Wiffert Dinesen’s 50th birthday in 1945, captures a special moment in the history of both the family and Denmark. It shows the guests at Jørgen Dinesen’s birthday party in 1945 – a dinner that not only celebrated his birthday, but also Denmark’s liberation from German occupation. This celebration, which took place a month and a half after the end of the war, became a symbol of both personal and national victory.

Guests of the celebration
The 213 guests included a mix of family, friends, neighbors and estate staff, all of whom were closely associated with Kragerup Gods and the Dinesen family. In the photo you can spot several former owners of the estate, including Jørgen Eigil Wiffert Dinesen himself, who was the 6th generation of the Dinesen family to run Kragerup Gods. Behind him is his son, Erik Sophus Dinesen, who would later take over the estate after him. Viveka Dinesen, the current estate owner Regitze Dinesen’s great-grandmother and Jørgen’s wife, can also be seen among the festive guests.

The entire staff was invited
Petrine, the housekeeper who worked at Kragerup for many years, is also immortalized in the photo. She is seen in the bottom right corner wearing a fur collar and glasses. She was known for always having a Manna-cerut hanging in her mouth while preparing food for the household and party guests. Her many years of service on the estate made her an integral part of daily life and celebrations.

Jørgen Dinesen as a resistance fighter
However, this day was special not only because of his birthday, but also because of Jørgen Dinesen’s involvement in the resistance movement during World War II. He played an important role as a resistance fighter, which required both courage and strategic skill in the fight against the German occupation. During the war, Jørgen Dinesen was part of the O-group in the resistance movement, whose task was to organize the resistance fighters in the area.

After the war and the liberation of Denmark, it was therefore a special joy and relief for both the Dinesen family and the other guests to be able to gather under peaceful circumstances. The mood in the photo reflects this deep gratitude, with young girls in the house, boys, family members and friends joining in the celebrations.

The photograph at Kragerup Gods is thus not only a memory of a personal celebration, but also of a time when the country regained its freedom.
