Alvilde’s room

<p style="font-weight: 400">Alvilde Dinesen (1841-1893) was born on Katholm and was Karen Blixen’s aunt. Birgitte Dinesen, the 8th generation of the Dinesen family at Kragerup Gods, shares a personal story about Alvilde: </p> <p style="font-weight: 400">“Alvilde Dinesen was my great-grandfather’s sister. Together with her brother Wilhelm Dinesen, she owned the properties Rungstedgaard, Rungstedlund and Folehave. When she married her cousin Johan Ulrik Peter Wilhelm Dinesen in 1863, she took her share of the properties into the marriage. Johan died early, and his older brother Sophus later married Alvilde and adopted the couple’s four children.”</p> <p style="font-weight: 400">Birgitte reflects on the time: “It was not uncommon in the latter half of the 19th century for cousin-cousin marriages to take place, or for a man to marry his deceased brother’s widow to preserve the family property. Single women had no status, even if they came from a wealthy family. By marrying Sophus Dinesen, Alvilde preserved her position.”</p> <p style="font-weight: 400">The room named after Alvilde Dinesen reflects her place in the family history and is room number 9.</p>
